If we take care of our vehicles with regular oil changes, tune-ups, the best fuel we can afford and proper care they will run strong for a very, very long time. Even-more-so our miraculous bodies. These bodies are constantly working to find homeostasis. As long as we take care of our bodies with excellent fuel/food, regular exercise and cyclical cleansing they will do the rest of the work in maintaining balance and vibrant health.

There are people who believe fasting and other forms of detoxification are too abrasive and that our bodies will cleanse naturally. To that I would say that cleansing is a part of nature, you even see animals who will fast and eat grass to help their bodies purge from toxins. Also, we are bombarded by more man made environmental toxins than would ever be found in nature. It is my feeling and observation that regular cleansing/detoxification is essential in combating the toxic load of our modern times.

The following article summarizes my basic Juice Feasting/Cleansing protocol. It is my intention to give freely the support and information you may need to get started on your self empowered cleansing process, and vibrant life journey. If you are not sure where to purchase any of the supplements, detox tools or books I recommend there is a small amazon store at the bottom of this page.  Please take the time to read through the entire article before starting your cleanse. Later you can use the charts as a reference tool.

This program can be used for a short 1 – 3 day cleanse or for longer more extensive periods up to 90 or more days. If you should choose to do a longer more extensive cleanse, I highly recommend hiring a coach to see you through it. The following protocol will be for 3 weeks of actual juicing days. Adjust as fits your personal health goals.

This program is based on what I learned through multiple intestinal cleanses and heavily on the Juice Feasting protocol which you can learn about in detail at www.JuiceFeasting.com

Preparing for your Cleanse

Set your start date with at least 10 days prior to cleanse to prepare.

Decide how long you want your cleanse to last, and keep in mind that you will need at least 5 days to re-enter eating solid foods.

10 days prior to cleanse start testing your fasting blood sugar level.     Test fasting blood sugar upon waking every morning for 10 days. You can purchase a $10 – $20 monitor with 10 free test strips at your local drug store (CVS, Walgreens etc,).  Add all your days together and divide by 10. This number is your average fasting blood sugar. Write your number down and use the chart below to determine what juices you can enjoy on your juice feast.
What your numbers mean:
85 or less You have no problem with blood sugar.Juice Feast: 1 quart of fruit juice each day is should be fine unless you are dealing with candidiasis or an overgrowth of candida/yeast/fungus/mold, in which case you will want to avoid fruit juices other than sour fruits like lemons, limes, and cranberries.
85 – 100 David Rainoshek of JuiceFeasting.com calls this pre pre-diabetic.  From JuiceFeasting.com: Your blood sugar is a little high, which is placing an extra burden on your pancreas, and could lead to a compromise of vital organs such as your brain, kidneys, pancreas, and heart in later life which could be prevented by lowering your blood sugar.Juice Feast: 1 quart of fruit juice each day is possible, but mix in green superfood powders, and drink mid-day.
100 – 115 From JuiceFeasting.com:Pre-Diabetic.
This may be a surprise to you. However, close to 100 million Americans are pre-diabetic. This means that your cells are not taking up sugar efficiently, probably because they are toxic. This level needs to come down or you could develop diabetes within 10 years, according to the American Diabetes Association. This is possible.
Juice Feast: All Green Vegetable Juices with a little carrot, apple, and lemon. You need exercise!
126 and over From JuiceFeasting.com:Diabetic.
Please see a health professional knowledgeable in the reversal of diabetes with Plant-Based Nutrition, such as Dr. Gabriel Cousens, M.D. at the Tree of Life Rejuvenation Center or Brian Clement at Hippocrates Health Institute. Do not attempt a Juice Feast on your own, and only begin once you have professional guidance.
Juice Feast: All Green Vegetable Juices without carrot, and apple, and lemon in moderation. Supervised by a health professional. Do not attempt to come off blood sugar medications without professional guidance. Please read There is a Cure for Diabetes with Gabriel Cousens, M.D. with David Rainoshek, M.A.

Prepare your body to Cleanse

10 Days Prior                                                   Start drinking 2 qts. water a day with a splash of lemon juice.Stop drinking coffee – replace with green tea if needed.
5 Days Prior Stop eating meat, dairy, eggs.Start drinking a 1 quart Green Smoothie or Green Juice first thing in the morning.
2 Days Prior Stop eating grains, nuts and seeds.Start drinking 1 quart of a green smoothie or green juice in the morning and afternoon.
1 Day (or more) Prior                               Purchase 6 – 8 quart sized mason jars for storing your juices.Purchase vegetables for the first 3-4 days of your feast. Try and keep your shopping to 2-3 times a week at most.Everyday you should include 1 bunch of celery and 1 – 2 large cucumbers. Leafy greens should change as much as possible and you have wild edibles growing in your organic garden, by all means use those (Dandelion, purslane, nettles, nasturtiums, etc., just make sure you KNOW they are edible!).

Beginning Your Cleanse

A day in the life of Juice Feasting

This chart is based on when I wake up and go to sleep, activities I will partake in. You can adjust the times and activities according to what you do, or want to do in your life and to fit your lifestyle, rhythms and abilities.

Upon Waking 6 am                                                                                           Drink 1 quart purified water with 1 Tbs. pure MSM powder and half of a lemon. This is a good time to take your b12, mega hydrate and probiotics if taking any.
6:30 am Start Juicing – Make at least 4 quarts of juice to prepare yourself for having plenty throughout the day (Juices should be made fresh every day). You should drink at least this much to be sure you are getting the calories and nutrition you need. If you find you are still hungry feel free to drink more vegetable juices. Remember to keep in mind your fasting blood sugar results and drink the juices that are appropriate for you.
Keep in mind the juicing process is likely to take 1 to 1 ½ hours from start to finish, but that’s it for the day, unless you get hungry 😉
Try and use as much variety as possible when making your juices.
You can find a number of delicious recipes if you search around the web. I will include a few of my favorites at the bottom of this page. While you juice is a great time to take a Tbs. of coconut oils and swish it in your mouth for 20 minutes, after 20 minutes spit the oil out – do not swallow it. The practice of oils pulling supports detoxification through pulling toxins from your mouth, gums, teeth.
8 am Drink your first Quart of Juice.(Get my son ready for school) or if you have no other responsibilities this is the best time to get your enema and coffee enema in. Also a good time to do some skin brushing.
9:30 Get some exercise. Exercises that are excellent while cleansing are rebounding, yoga, or a dance class that moves your soul. But get some exercise, it will help to move the lymph, keep your circulation going and support detox through sweat.
10:30 – 11:00 am  Drink more juice if so desired, or a cup of tea, water with green powder, or perhaps your only chewable – a Tbs. of local wild bee pollen (optional).
11:30 – noon This is likely when I I will get my enema and coffee enemas in. I will be striving for doing daily enemas and coffee enemas at least 3 days a week to support liver cleansing and general release of toxins. I will drink another quart of water with a splash of lemon after my enema.
12:30 Nourishing Herbal Tea
1 pm 1 Tbs. extra virgin coconut oil to eat
1:30 3rd Quart of Juice
3 pm  Shot of ginger juice with a few drops of oregano oil (optional, excellent against candida and a great afternoon energizer).
4 pm Herbal Tea or Probiotic Drink.
5 pm Last Quart of Juice (unless I get hungry again – remember you can drink as much vegetable juice as you like).
6 pm 1 Tbs. Extra Virgin, Cold Pressed Hemp Oil
6:30 pm Herbal Tea or Probiotic Drink
7 pm 5 Tibetans or other gentle exercise/movement/meditation
8 pm                                                                                                                                 Prepare for the next day. Perhaps wash your veggies, get kids meals prepared so you have more time in the morning. Take time for journaling/self care and get to bed before 10. While cleansing it is very important to get plenty of sleep.

Create a daily routine for your juice making, drinking, and detox strategies.

Be diligent in following your plan.

If possible find a friend to join you and have a 15 minute daily check in. The support helps. Alternatively you can hire a coach to be with you through your cleanse.

If you are experiencing detox reactions like headaches, nausea, dizziness, or fatigue make sure you are supporting your body’s elimination process. (See Below)

It is normal, expected and invited to go through some emotional detox when on a cleanse as well. As we release old waste from our bodies, emotional waste that has been stored in our cells can also be stirred up. It is very helpful to have an outlet for the emotions that are likely to arise. (See Below)

Support for Physical Detox Reactions

Detox reactions can include (but are not limited to) headaches, fatigue, nausea, dizziness, and skin eruptions.

Enema’s         Your first line of defense against detox reactions is an enema. Get comfortable with them, I use them daily while cleansing. Look up youtube videos and take at least an enema a day. If you are experiencing uncomfortable detox symptoms take another enema. Some people are concerned about enemas removing the good gut bacteria. If this is a concern for you consider doing an enema followed by a probiotic implant before bed to re-establish gut flora.
Coffee enema’s If you are still experiencing severe detox symptoms after doing a regular enema try a coffee enema. Check out some youtube video’s and get comfortable with the method. I will be using coffee enemas at least three days a week to support liver cleansing.
Colon Hydrotherapy  You can also go to a professional Colon Hydrotherapist to get a deep colon cleanse. They will also provide implants for you  if requested. Implants can include probiotics, or wheatgrass to name a couple.
Lymphatic Massage Make sure you are exercising and sweating do saunas to help your body release toxins through your skin.
Sweat Every day you should do some form of exercise or activity that will cause you to break a sweat.
Hot/Cold showers After taking a shower spend a few minutes transitioning between hot and cold water. The extreme temperatures support circulation, lymphatic drainage and turn on your immune system. You will find that if you end your shower on cold you will be much warmer when you get out than if you end on hot.
Skin Brushing
Water Even though you are drinking all that juice, nothing will replace the cleansing effect of drinking pure water. Spring water is best, but Reverse Osmosis with a splash of lemon or high mineral sea salt will also do.

Support for Emotional Detox Reactions

Cleansing is a great time to clean out old emotional clutter and baggage whether it comes up on its own or not. You may want to consider using one or more of the following techniques to process/release and get further in touch with your authentic self.

Emotional Freedom Technique
Spending time in nature
Talking to a friend or therapist
Getting a Massage, Acupuncture, or other Healing Modality
Creative Expression – art, dance, music
A bath with epsom salts and essential oils
Listen to inspiring teachings that will support your mental/emotional empowerment. I like Abraham Hicks, or Byron Katie as a start. Check them out on youtube.

You can expect that the first 3 days of the cleanse will be the most difficult. By the 3rd day many people start to feel great (especially if you are supporting your body’s elimination process). It may take your body a bit longer but once you get through the muck you will come out the other side. Many people start to feel euphoric and even think they could just go on juicing forever. We cannot juice forever but we can use that time when we are clean, clear, feeling vibrant and inspired to set some foundation for our future. I suggest taking some time to set out goals while cleansing. Here is a link to Brian Tracy’s “Strategic Goal Setting for Success Guide”, I highly recommend using it and making goal setting a regular part of your life.

During your cleanse is also a great time to read about healthy eating practices and decide what types of food/diet will best serve you and your family. Write down recipes, look up videos and get clear on how to prepare, menu plan and successfully begin your new or upgraded eating practices when you transition back into solid foods.

The process of incorporating solid foods and moving out of the cleanse protocol should be seen as part of the cleanse itself. That way, you will not struggle with the gradual incorporation of solid foods. To the contrary you will be prepared for it, and it will be a part of your predetermined cleansing program. The length of time you take to introduce your “everyday” fare depends on the length of your cleanse. If you are juicing for 1-3 days you may take just 1 day to transition back, if your cleanse is 7-10 days you may want to take 3 days as a transition period, if your cleanse is 2 or more weeks taking at least 5 days to allow your body to adjust to digesting solid foods is a good idea.

Because I am doing a minimum of 3 weeks I will show you how to transition in 5 days. Remember this is part of your cleanse, have that in mind when you determine the length of your program. I am juicing for 3 weeks, but with working my way in for 5 days and working my way out for 5 days the whole cleanse is closer to just over a month in length.

Transitioning into Solid Foods

As you transition remember to keep drinking your 2 quarts of water everyday. It is a wonderful practice to continue drinking a quart of water with MSM and lemon juice upon waking. Or omit the MSM, but continue the water and lemon first thing in the morning.

Day 1                              Start by incorporating green smoothies in replacement for a couple of the juices.
Day 2 Enjoy green smoothies, fresh fruit and some fresh vegetables.
Day 3 You can begin including some steamed vegetables and cooked vegetable soups. Starchy vegetables included like yams, and squash.
Day 4 Add some natural fats like avocado, extra virgin oils with lemon for salad dressings, or sprouted nuts and seeds.
Day 5 If you eat grains you may incorporate them in (I suggest only gluten free grains like quinoa, amaranth, buckwheat, millet, and always soak them from the night before and rinse well before cooking).
Day 6 Transition into your upgraded diet, and remember you can keep juicing, or drinking green smoothies to get a big boost of alkaline forming, disease fighting, health supporting vitamins, minerals, nutrients, enzymes and phytochemicals.

Even if you are not a raw foodist, vegan or vegetarian eating fresh greens are key to maintaining good health and supporting your bodies natural defenses. You can eat them in smoothies and juices, but having a big serving of fresh veggies (leafy greens especially) with your meals will help your body in digestion, and assimilation of all your food, plus you want all the good stuff those greens offer.

Come back to this cleanse 1 – 4 times or more a year. As often as you see fit. Regular cleansing will support your health maintenance in this modern world.

One of my Favorite Green Juice Recipes

makes 2 quarts

4 medium to large Granny Smith Apples

1 very large or 2 medium sized cucumbers

2 large lemons – juiced

1 bunch celery medium to large

½ bunch cilantro

1 bunch dino kale small to med.

This is a great base recipe. You can use the same base and switch out the leafy greens for variety, and nutrient spectrum.
